  8. YoLithos says:

That article about composing writs of indenture for children – in the digital age – brought to mind Hwa Joon Chang’s consideration about child labor, slavery, and traffic in human organs having once been completely legal and almost unremarkable in the ‘civilized’ world. And his observation about their being outlawed in the modern world not being generally considered as a destruction of ‘Free Trade’.

Those children are being employed and exploited to find, produce, and deliver lumps of data for the “provider’s” data mines and data factories. Much as children in the developed world were used in mining and industry. And similar arguments seem to be hovering in the aisles these days, in waiting, as used to be openly aired in those hopefully bygone ones. Whose sins and errors seem to be gathering in digital form, as they used to range the physical world imposing blight and misery upon Humanity as the price of it’s concentrated and centralized improvement of it.

It would be prudent to have established decades ago, from the start, the principle of personal protections in the physical world presumed as natural, as just as necessary, and as automatically applicable in the digital realm until extended and perfected – but never restricted. As a reflection of essentially the same humans creating another world in their – and this world’s – image. With the same hazards and a need for equivalent moderation. Starting with all those personal and public guarantees that modern failing nation-states find so irksome. From the modern covenants on Civil and Human Rights, all the way to their original principles in the dawn of legal systems.

  9. YoLithos says:

    Virtual porn. Virtual politics?

  10. YoLithos says:

The physical politicking thing can be more overpowering than the remote-voting process. The close whispering, note-passing, etc. Do politicians still do that? Or is that part all done by their lobbyists now, they themselves having been relegated to drone status?

  11. YoLithos says:

No need to tweet at GS and the other monstrosities. They’re right at hand. Paw to paw. Slime to slime. Only the outliers and second or third tier beasts seem to need and serve that sort of theatrical acclaim. Which sort of exposes something of the working pecking-order and global fortunes. Pecking order fortune ookies, er, cookies.

  12. YoLithos says:

Micromanaging a farm can have good outcomes. Doesn’t it seem to exhibit a slightly better track record in small businesses than in larger ones? Micromanaging a country tends to be inefficient. The equivalent of busy-work for heads of state. Typical of dictators in the past.

  13. YoLithos says:

An electric car factory in the heartland of oil economy politics would be in for an eventful future.

  14. YoLithos says:

Places that pass laws against selling electric except in branded (electric) dealerships. Then deny licenses to electric dealerships.

  15. YoLithos says:

The US’s electric Dunkirk? The Chinese must be politely cheering and clapping like crazy. The better for them and the world-playing others. Europeans, for example. US tariffs can just be recovered from their attempted overseas purchases, anyway. That could force some needed relief for their currency exchange rates.

For starters, I wonder how much Univision’s counteroffer for Twitter would be, in a takeover bidding war. Keeping share price up after a takeover might require a lot of “creative management”. FED help. Stuff like that. The prospect of it then mutating naturally into a more subordinate PBS is worth considering.

  22. YoLithos says:

Not that bidding in a Twitter corporate takeover wouldn’t be any oppressive regimes tyrannical wet dream that would put Singer, Bain, and that ilk to shame. Dubai, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and others worldwide, for example.

Just as true as “The Economy made me do it!”.

    Entertainment value.

Another one straight from pulp Science Fiction and breathless RKO Serials teasers, into real life headlines.

  47. YoLithos says:

Decades of psychological pressure from advertisement and PR “culture” probably resulted in society’s developing “permanent psychological damage” similar to what those “Perv Patrol” employees suffered. Or worse. With even less resource.

There’s this movie about the first (real) long term serial killer criminal investigation in the (redundancy) old Soviet Union. Sounds like a positive case study.

‘…won’t need to rely on fossil fuels to make up for its energy. Peak demand in the region will have declined by more than the 2,000 megawatts the plant generates, and the replacement power will be carbon neutral as the State further increases its clean energy investments,” …

“There will be little impact on electricity bills — between $1 and $2 dollars a month — which is a small price to pay for minimizing the risk that this plant poses.

Going forward, new efficiency and renewable energy projects will drive still greater savings for consumers, thanks to aggressive energy investments by the state…’

  80. YoLithos says:

    A funny thought.
Isn’t it curious that putting in government at the same time so many people so intensely determined to undo such great parts of it. So set against the very notion of government. Is tantamount to allowing them to overthrow it? Aren’t there laws against that?

  81. YoLithos says:

Isn’t investing so vehemently against any and all essential public services a public threat? By definition, a threat to the public, to public safety and well-being?

    Consumer Debt Surges In November

    Jeff Gundlach’s Forecast For 2017

The 10-year closed at 2.38% on the day he spoke. He said it will go below 2.25% but not below 2% in the current rally. Analysts’ forecasts for the 10-year yield have been consistently too high over the last five years. Now forecasters are predicting a flat year, but Gundlach had a different view. “I think rates are going to rise in 2017,” he said. “For sure rates are going to rise.”

Moreover, as he said in his prior webcast, if the 10-year yield surpasses 3%, “the bond bull market is over from a classic chart perspective.” He said that would also mean “trouble” for equity markets. Gundlach noted that another prominent bond manager had made the same prediction, but said the threshold was 2.60% instead of 3%. But Gundlach pointed out that the yield had already reached 2.64% last year. He did not name this manager, but it almost certainly was Bill Gross.

In the short-term, though, he said, “We are going to see another leg up on bond yields after this rally.” Over the medium term, Gundlach said the 10-year yield could hit 6% in four years, about the time of the next presidential election. He noted that inflation and economic growth are already at levels similar to 2006, when interest rates were at 6%. A move to 6% would not be bad for bond investors, he said, given the opportunity to reinvest coupons at higher yields, and returns might be similar to what investors would have received on a stagnant 1.5% yield.
