[KR942] Keiser Report: Crisis of Capitalism

We talk to Dmitry Orlov, author of The Collapse Gap, about a “pathway to a different future.” Orlov suggests that “150 strong” can solve many of the problems present in our economies and societies – smaller communities of 150 who can trust each other and work together as a unit during the crisis of capitalism. We also discuss the drumbeat of war and how war is not the answer to the global economic depression.

Dmitry seems to think that if people band together in groups of 150 that we can solve all the problems of people falling through the cracks of capitalism and bureaucracy. Thats not going to work, you are not going to have people with white collar jobs taking care of all the needs of people who work at McDonalds and Kmart. The poor are being priced out of existence by a have/have-not society. What Dmitry is calling for is for the upper income people to take up the slack of what society and the government should be doing which is provide services like health care and housing subsidty. His ‘paradigm’ of compassion is fundamentally flawed because its calling on the system of a commune to prop up the system of capitalism.

People seem to think that America is the land of opportunity and upward mobility and its not. People may yearn to come to the US from 3rd world countries only because there is no upward mobility in those countries. That was only true during the industrial age from 1850 to 1980 when most people were manufacturing and building things and it was possible to make good money doing that because of unions. We are in the informational and technical age now. Unions are dead now because its no longer possible to make good money from high paying union jobs. So now its make a lot of money from a white collar job or be poor. And honestly the US is the worst country in the world to be poor and I say that as someone who has lived in Mexico for 10 years. Mexicans can get away with working extremely low wage jobs here only because of the cost of living difference. If we had to use local labor instead of 11 million illegal workers then we would see even worse conditions in the US.

The actual commune system that Dmitry is calling for would only work if you had an isolated economy of 150 people growing their own crops, building their own houses and selling their crops in exchange for certain needs like electricity, appliances, farming equipment, etc. I would like to see such communes set up in the US as an experiment to combat corporate farming that is wiping out family farms.

Yes, I still miss those nice communities I took part in.
No state support required, just work together.
    New ones will sprout up.

  3. Flopot says:

Dmitry fears for Israel’s security 😉

I’m sure when the reaping is over, the chosen few can setup all the communes they like.

  4. Flopot says:

^Plenty of space in vacated Syria and Iraq these days for all those communes. Although I hear Palestinians are still vacating their homes for some reason I cannot quite recall…

  15. YoLithos says:

Small groups of 150 lack diversity. They quickly lose vitality and decay into hierarchically rigid isolationist stagnation. That’s the larger size cults like their subunits. Though smaller groupings of about 50 to 75 seem to be closer to the norm. That’s the size for kool-aid mass suicides and witch crazes to take effect. About the same as most gang structures prefer. They are the right size for takeover and control by ‘strong personalities’. Basically devolving into something like strongman tribal politics in colonial times. That is a project for everyone shattered into universal inbred autistic weakness. A poison apple with explosives inside.

And (from long ago and far away) : “Ploicy is decided at the ground level in the local Soviets and committees. The national councils enact the decisions and directives that they bring to it. Whose orders the bureaucrats obey” … etc. And : “American Democracy is still strong and healthy at the grass roots level. Which what makes it fundamentally strong.”. And : “The voting district insures that voters know their candidate and can interact with him at close quarters. Avoiding the obsession with abstract faraway personalities.”. All the way to Pol Pot.

Anyone who thinks that small closed community pressure is not inflexible and irrational to a much greater degree than in more open systems really should take time to reconsider. It has been the cause for much eloping for as long as humanity itself has been around. And worse.

  16. YoLithos says:

I really enjoyed the “less need for travel’ argument. It reminded me of another old ditty about “Workers don’t need to travel for survival like in the USA. The state guarantees them food, housing, and all necessities. Those that seek travel and adventure can still find it in transportation and pioneering work. The travel permits are only necessary to prevent criminals from entering innocent communities.”.

“Small groups of 150 lack diversity.”

but Orlov also suggests that, bigger groups are easier to manipulate and brainwash

one way to solve creating economic networks with more diversity so that they can adapt to the balancing act of economics, ecology and philosophy, is for mankind around the globe, accept to replace government with artificial intelligence, the machine would connect a diversified group of people and make governance decisions that are not based on greed and vanity

but! before that humanity would have to agree what values they cherish the and… i could only see that happen with direct democracy for an irreversible decision, which brings me back to anarchy (the real meaning of the word “non use of force!!!”)

Self-sufficient groups: It’s useful to examine history in relation to this.

Medieval times/feudal system. Britain and most of Europe:

A small community group was known as “A Hundred.” This meant 100 able bodied man for defense and other needed work. This was based on the earlier roman military unit of which a “centurion” was in charge of.

100 able bodied men suggests a group of around 250 if you include women, older people and children (who also can perform useful work).

I live in a rural area where there are several small villages. Thus you can have several groups who have different skills and capabilities. There are two or three coastal villages who catch and farm fish. Then there are more inland villages who can grow food, raise chickens, Etc.

The area in between is mainly farms with dairy and arable mixed in. This could be expanded to breeding rabbits for meat, pigs, goats and other small scale stuff.

This could work quite well here. However, it would be a different story in an urban or high density dwelling suburban setting.

Tractors you can repair yourself. Early Massey Ferguson. There are also a whole bunch of smaller, Asian tractors used mainly in places like South Korea for small scale farmers that are simple and basic.

Small groups are easier to control than large ones. The failure to be able to maintain diversity destroys them. Large numbers of relatively isolated and self-obsessed, regimented small socially autistic groups, are also easier to control by overt or covert means at the wider level. Which is why the efforts and structures necessary at that scale become so artificial and extreme and easier to counter. Unless they assume an extreme scale which makes them that much more unviable as an evolving society. Or just as one that does not collapse.

As every petty strongman, petty warlord, and cult dictator, has proven historically. Over and over again.

An interesting case study is what happens to teritorrially widespread established pirate cultures when their prey goes away. They don’t disappear. They reduce. And change. As little as possible. Then they fail.

  27. YoLithos says:

“…the efforts and structures necessary at that scale…”
Intended to refer to society not divvied up and regimented into corrals, small blocks, cult compounds, etc.

U.S. lawsuits link Malaysian leader to stolen money from 1MDB fund
    Jul 21, 2016

The U.S. lawsuits seek to seize assets “involved in and traceable to an international conspiracy to launder money misappropriated from 1MDB” over a four-year period.

One transaction targeted by prosecutors was a $3-billion bond offering in early 2013 that was arranged by Goldman Sachs International, said U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker at a briefing on Wednesday. She is the chief prosecutor in central California.

More than a third of that money was misappropriated by corrupt officials, she said.

Goldman Sachs has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

  62. YoLithos says:

When one Central Bank and its banks start printing more money and public debt, so do the others. More is more. When one makes more money, so do the others.

  63. YoLithos says:

The “Too many people” argument is flawed. It lacks context. As in not considering the carrying capacity of existent technology and resources, their use, and wider interconnections.

The leaders, the privileged, and their followers are the ones that seem to always feel that “there are too many people”. And also are very uncomfortable with the idea of there there being more of “them” than of “us”. Which they quickly reduce to the concept of being “outnumbered”.

Then, those small dominant structures usually answer to “the problem” by fragmenting the rest of “them” into smaller subunits are easier to control and embed with supervisors and caretakers. With ample use of branding and stereotyping.

  64. YoLithos says:

Ancient history is fraught with examples of populations being evicted, decimated, and forced to grow crops or livestock, or collect resources for use by their conquerors. Outside of their traditions, of their interests, and of their needs. England being converted to the flax and wool trade by bankers and merchants comes to mind as a fine example. In an age where power and populations were fragmented and rooted to the land. Except for the bankers. And merchants. And their guilds and contracts that exacted charters, privileges, rights, endowments, and more. Oh, and the Catholic Church, of course. A process which continued all the way to the colonization of Ireland and then of Africa and the slave trade.

  65. YoLithos says:

Again. Group identity is a superset of identifying oneself by one’s rules. And the latter support the former. One is a part and an expression of the other. And they both are part of the same whole. Creating an identity without rules is a definition of the essence of a psychopath. bad robot. Very flawed. A far from complete human. A human without an essential component of empathy.

Every hypertrophy is by definition a monstrosity. In psychology they are seen as neuroses. But not all of them are terminal or unrecoverable. “Rule idolatry” being an essentially human and prehistoric as an exaggeration of the force of hierarchy, of respect, and of the pecking order. One of the cornerstones of organized religion and tribal authority. And of working groups in general. From families to gangs to tribes to utopian anarchies. Take away its healthy expression and conceptualization, and one is left with rag dolls instead of humans. And with loose sand instead of strong foundations. And with thing like fear, hate, and greed being left as the only driving forces.

The question where the randomness of gene mutation gets obtained,
