[KR567] Keiser Report: Financial Death Shriekers

We discuss the shriek factor in financial markets and the whirlpool of money death at MtGox. In the second half, Max interviews Jan Skoyles of The Real Asset Company about the biggest gold heists in history, the Goldilocks year for the gold and silver markets and the crowd-funding campaign for Get REAL.

Fred Wilson (investor in Twitter, Kickstarter, Tumblr, Zynga & Foursquare) blogs re MtGox:

There is a lot of venture capital being invested in the Bitcoin sector right now. Much of that investment is going into the infrastructure, processes, and technology to provide the kind of safeguards that are mentioned in that paragraph. We are witnessing the maturation of a sector and part of that will inevitably be failures, crashes, and other messes. Almost every technology that I’ve watched come into a mass adoption has gone through these sorts of growing pains. One big difference is that in addition to technology, we are also talking about people’s money when we talk about Bitcoin. To me, that doesn’t change the discussion and the implications, but it sure does amplify the emotions around it.

Full disclosure: I bought a little Bitcoin today. Not much. But I always feel good buying when there is blood in the streets in any market. It is my favorite time to buy.

Bit coin was created by a person using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto (中本哲史). He is believed to have over 1 million bit coins and has a net worth in excess of $1bn USD. Although if it’s unknown if he’s actually from japan as none of the code of documentation contains any Japanese language or so-called Engrish.

Even with the Mt. Gox blow up the coin price is still trading around $400USD per coin. The issue is the exchanges are unregulated and folks out money really have no recourse. I can’t imaging the Japanese Police getting involved either.

A Blighty-based Bitcoin bod has claimed the Winklevoss twins’ cryptocurrency stock ticker has “taken influence” from his own open source service.

The Zucker-baiters launched a website called Winkdex last week, which uses a patent-pending mathematical to formula to track the price of Bitcoin on several different exchanges.

However, the boss of a similar site called Bitcoin Average contacted us to say that he already offered a similar service to anyone wanting to track the ever-fluctuating value of the virtual funny money.

Citigroup: Here Are Three Risks Facing Bitcoin

Mr. Englander outlined three risks facing Bitcoin right now:

    1) Bitcoin traders and potential investors lose confidence in the security and safety of Bitcoin transactions and holdings.

    2) Other digital currencies start eating into Bitcoin’s market share, taking away some of the first-mover advantage.

    3) “Competition emerges from conventional financial institutions using generic bitcoin technology, without the decentralization and within the conventional regulatory framework,” Mr. Englander says.

    Metals Discussion, or Something Different?
    By California Lawyer – February 26, 2014

Part of what I like to do is simply open my eyes, ears, and mind, and try to see connections between seemingly unrelated things. I am reminded of how Alton Brown of the Food Network used welders’ gloves as kitchen mitts. Now that was a great idea, simple, but revolutionary. It is that kind of simplicity that I strive to find.

So, I tend to notice when there are some events that have taken place, that we all read about, and have taken note of, that the mainstream media ignores. That there is the very first clue for me to pay even more attention….

One such event, or series of events, is the rash of recent banker “suicides.”…

US and Japan authorities probe Bitcoin attacks as “leak” blogger claims there’s no buyer for MtGox

the blogger who leaked Karpeles’s “crisis strategy draft” earlier this week said in a new post that MtGox has not been able to find an investor. Which may have something to do with the outfit having allegedly conducted zero audits of its customer deposits. Ever.

investors approached by MtGox were so horrified by the situation at the exchange that they subsequently “restricted their own employees from buying or selling bitcoin themselves.”
