[KR226] Keiser Report: Capitalism Without Capital?

After after revealing that the Lizard King is back, we discuss the radical redistribution of gold and silver property in the US and the radical experiment in the UK to have capitalism without capital. In the second half of the show, Max talks to Professor Steve Keen about the UK’s financial sector debt which is at least 4 times as large as US financial sector debt before the global financial crisis began.

“Printing your own currency is not an easy task, because Greece does not own the sophisticated technology necessary, but you can still figure a way out.” – Mary Genoud

Funny but sad. The Greek government can afford increased spending on advanced military weaponry but they don’t have the technology to print fiat money that can’t easily be counterfeited.

I do think Greece could make a fungible money out of something like tally sticks or shells. Primitive as it may be, something like a metal coin of some kind would be an excellent idea! Actually, they could be innovative and work something new like a bitcoin system (though I’m still not so sure that can’t be electronically hacked by people with very powerful supercomputers) or alternative resource based system (if anyone can figure out a way to make it work). One of the first steps might be to reform their monetary system by getting rid of usury and the corrupt bankers – otherwise it seems a non-starter to me.

Incidentally, 111 metric tons of Greek gold would have translated to 3 568 732.87 troy ounces or about 35 million 1/10 ounce gold coins in circulation. With 11,319,048 people, that’s about 3 gold coins per person. The size of the Greek economy would require the money to change hands moderately fast but it doesn’t appear to be at an outrageous velocity. If I understand the terms correctly, this is probably not enough to meet the liquidity needs for a functioning economy but I think if one were to add some silver, copper, bronze, etc. then they could easily meet the economic needs of the Greek people.

The problem with hard currency like gold is that it is more difficult to track and tax in a complex society. This is probably why governments and bankers love the sophistication of today’s credit based money where they can track practically everything you do. Digital money that can be tracked down to the last atom of material purchased in exchange is a control freaks ultimate wet dream. If we go to a gold standard, I expect they’d find a way to mark it before they did. Can’t let the peasants get all uppity and think they’re free. ;-)
