    European leaders are ‘lifting the lid on Pandora’s box’

    Excerpt

    Greece’s finance minister, Evangelos Venizelos, will lead the Greek delegation to Brussels, where he is expected to outline the national consensus platform on implementing the bail-out deal.

    Olli Rehn, the EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner, told Reuters that they needed a “convincing” report from Mr Venizelos.

    Calling on Greece to establish a national unity government, he added that Athens’ European partners “faced last week a breach of confidence by Greece which meant that Greece took itself on a course that would lead it outside the euro zone.

    “We do not want that but we must be prepared for every scenario, including that one, for the sake of safeguarding financial stability and saving the euro,” he said.

    Kunstler is intertaining, but doesn’t share too much info. My comment is on the interview with Mr. Daz. Very good interview – like him alot. However, both armchair economists (and all economists) are ignoring the rest of us.

    I don’t know about you, Max, or Mr. Daz, or Mr. Kunster, but MY standard of living has been much, much worse than my parents – and they lived through the last Great Depression. The only way that I and my daughter could live, was to utilize credit to my advantage – there were many years of starving throughout. I was hoping that the ows would get that through to yous all. But what the hey, I haven’t gotten that point to the child either. I guess if we all close our eyes and click our heels, we’ll all disappear.

    Great “STFU Cameron!”, too. A little immature, but intelligent, funny and to the point.

    Brilliant article @kdt!

    It has a real resonance with what I do. One of the businesses I run is an SEO company. I won’t go into the details (we’ve worked out a thing or two that we want to keep to ourselves) but we create our own networks of sites (these are ours, not other sites that our out there on the web, so we know everyting that goes on in them) and link them to client’s sites in certain ways. More importantly, we network all the sites we own (there are a large number of them). We call each of our sites a “node”.

    Clients sites are linked to from nodes on our network. What we’ve found is that there are some nodes (we call them “super-nodes”) that increase a client’s site rankings well beyond those that are linked to from other nodes on the network – although they are identical to the standard nodes! They act like nodes with their foot on the accelerator, as Barabási mentions.

    These super-nodes seem to appear by pure chance. It’s as though there’s a natural order that miraculously develops, just as mentioned in the article, where some nodes become super-nodes and hold the “power” in the node-network that’s been created. Amazing!

    In fact we’re so baffled by the power of these super-nodes we used to believe there’s some black-magic going on, because it’s not us that programme these nodes to act as the super-nodes they seem to naturally become.

    That article makes so much sense. Thanks again for posting it! Amazing stuff.

    And what is even more disturbing is that Germany itself is now demanding a referendum. According to Welt, 71% of Germans want a referendum, and want to to vote directly on important decisions for Europe and the Euro. Only 27% oppose the motion. And the same poll has found that 63% of Germans think Greece should be kicked out of the Euro, with just 32% believing the country can still be saved.

However, a sum of money, being of a nonphysical nature and growing according to the rules of compound interest at a fixed interest rate, can follow that curve indefinitely…Our principle constraints are cultural…we have evolved a culture so heavily dependent upon the continuance of exponential growth for its stability that it is incapable of reckoning with problems of non-growth…it behooves us…to begin a serious examination of the…cultural adjustments necessary…before unmanageable crises arise…”

  30. Jayme says:

    @kdt – very interesting article.

    I think this is why it is so important to get rid of the corruption in these super nodes and install rational regulatory systems that work to help stabilize the system. Overall, the system is already organized into these patterns. Consciously or not, the leaders are always looking for these control nodes. I expect that congressmen look to their corporate contributors as their control nodes for their re-election machine’s campaign. No big shock there.

    I think Max has identified a great deal of the system contamination in looking at the corrupt bankers. The knowledge and ability to control these patterns will not necessarily produce ‘evil’ outcomes. If the system becomes inherently oppressive to the people within it, then (the argument would have to be made) it is a sick system and would not survive very long. This is what revolution is all about: a bunch of politicians breaking the social contract. When the nodes are starved and social cohesion blown apart by incompetence in leadership, the radical elements will dissolve the networked order and begin again. My guess is that dynamic networks involving cultural shifts and shocks are not considered with any depth by Barabási’s work, though it does appear to be producing seminal results. Duncan Watt’s is also a contributor in this field.

    This work provides very useful models about the world which take on the form of nodes and branches but the world isn’t composed of nodes and branches. Unfortunately, like every new ground breaking theory there’s a tendency to elevate it as a cure all and, as with most every other technical solution to social ills, we will all suffer for this delusion until its usefulness wanes.

    Albert-László Barabási’s work may also help better explain Kleiber’s law and Dunbar’s number (??)

    The Trustee has grabbed all the “excess cash” in MFGlobal client accounts. Account segregation be damned. Then under an agreement between the Trustee and the CME initial margins are lowered so they equal maintenance margins temporarily. Cash equal to only 75% of the NEW margins was transferred, however. This means that the Trustee cleans out an additional 25% in cash and everyone has a margin call Monday morning.

    @Got Silver?

    Thanks for that vid post. It pretty much begs the question if derivatives, be it on bonds, or commodities or even on stock (e.g. options) are legitimate asset trades.

    We all know they are liability trades at some times (like now) but are they asset trades also. In a truly free market I think they are or can be and they might be logical hedging. Such as when you have a shipment of grain that’s to be financed, futures are supposed to fund its shipment. Right?

    Alas, that was the way they were first meant to function. Today they’re used as bail-out chips in the big casino and as the gambling chips whenever the game seems profitable. Doesn’t that perhaps serve as good reasons to have “BAN DERIVATIVES” on the OWS and GIABO shortlists?

    Stop the casino by taking their chips and declaring them to be worth nothing.

    Buy physical. Don’t buy derivatives.

    The Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Friday held a large meeting about the bankruptcy of MF Global Holdings Ltd. One person missing: CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler.

    The hard-charging chairman late last week removed himself from the investigation into MF Global Holdings Ltd.’s sudden implosion. Mr. Gensler’s decision was made to eliminate the perception of a conflict of interest due to his longstanding ties to the now-departed chief executive of MF Global, Jon S. Corzine. Mr. Gensler worked at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in the 1990s, when Mr. Corzine was the securities firm’s chairman and senior partner.

    The information transfer should read …”we are capable of a massive system change” … with a commentary output of 3X the average, a new “MirrorMirror” seems to me to be one of the more capable and could really kick some ass … if the information transfer is understood, only a minor, Mirror adjustment is at hand; a fresh point of view… A firm departure from pointing out “petulant assholes” to the much more important task of transition prototype, design can be expected.

    As I mentioned before … “We are all Greek Now.” >> “we are all astronauts … Only a fool would doubt this.” >> we are of nature … only a fool would doubt this. >> There is absolutely, no connection between the artificial monetary belief and nature; only a fool would doubt this >> it is an absurdity to co-mingle natures wisdom with money. “just because we’ve always done things that way doesn’t mean it is not incredibly stupid.”… it is absurd not depend on our ability to consult with nature and use emerging technologies to find new energy keys. Nature provides an abundance of Information and energy, we are capable problem solvers, yet we continue to consult with spreadsheets and artificial, abstract problems that we have never been able to solve.

    ARE there any DEMANDS in the above? …. Any thoughts on recruitment of one or two of the “Elites” for the new design .. they have experience with big numbers and aside from from using their butts for bike racks, a dismantled, Elite is just about as useless as their current configuration>LOL looking forward to a 4X, MirrorMirror
